This method describes the construction of an insulated cantilevered GBE wall and concrete slab.
To make the method shown in this document easier to understand, the insertion of GBE spacers used with formwork systems incorporating tie rods, as well as the external connector / internal connector assemblies, has intentionally been omitted from the explanatory diagrams.
This method must be adapted as necessary to comply with the installation recommendations, particularly the safety requirements, specified by the suppliers of the equipment and materials used to construct a GBE wall.
Phase 1:
-
Ensure that the lower cantilevered slab does not bear on the external concrete leaf, shown on the left-hand side of the diagram below.
-
The internal slab bears on the structural internal concrete wall, shown on the right-hand side of the diagram.
Phase 2:
-
Install the temporary propping required for construction of the slabs, together with the working platforms required to provide safe working conditions for the site operatives.
-
Position the internal formwork panel, or external formwork panel depending on the selected construction sequence, for the cantilevered GBE wall.
Phase 3:
-
Prepare the GBE wall in accordance with the GBE installation procedure.
-
Provide an insulation return at the bottom of the formwork and connect it to the upper insulation panel using GBE external connectors (daggers).
-
Tip: use a magnetic strip at the base of the wall to create a groove that will act as a drip edge.
-
Close and tighten the formwork in accordance with the formwork manufacturer's recommendations.
-
Place the concrete simultaneously for the internal and external concrete leaves.
Phase 4:
-
Strip the formwork from the cantilevered GBE wall. The internal concrete leaf acts structurally as a deep beam.
-
Install the reinforcement mesh required for construction of the lower cantilevered slab.
-
Position inverted U-shaped reinforcement bars to provide the connection between the cantilevered soffit slab and the upper structural slab.
Phase 5:
-
Cast the lower cantilevered slab, approximately 10 cm thick, and strip its formwork once the required concrete strength has been reached.
Phase 6:
-
Install the insulation panels through the inverted U-shaped reinforcement bars.
-
Insert and secure steel rods through the inverted U-shaped reinforcement bars.
-
Position reinforcement mesh in the upper part of the future internal slab.
Phase 7:
-
Cast the structural cantilevered slab and the internal slab.
-
Strip the formwork.
Phase 8:
-
Remove the temporary propping and working platforms.
